Timo Maas on another
all night session at The End.
Germany’s contribution to the world
of mainstream music has been limited, or
at least broadly overlooked by the Great
British public. However, there is no denying
their impact on the world of electronic
music. Where would the dance music world
be without the likes of Kraftwerk, Sven
Vath or Tiefschwarz? One DJ whose worldwide
status demands inclusion on that list is
Timo Maas. This much-loved, Grammy-nominated
DJ and producer from Hanover is another
one of The End’s all-night kings,
regularly playing marathon eight hour sets
in our main room.
Timo spent August enjoying a residency
at DC10 in Ibiza, which saw him play five
successive Wednesdays at the club - that
this summer deemed only Circo Loco and Timo
Maas events worthy of opening their doors
for. His talents as a DJ and producer have
won him an army of fans, not least the likes
of Madonna, Kelis, Placebo and Depeche Mode,
all of whom he has remixed for or had guest
on his albums in recent years. His notorious
genre-straddling style as a DJ has made
him a massive attraction at clubs across
the globe, and has seen him score a new
residency at Pacha in New York in addition
to his DC10 residency, and of course his
regular spot at The End.
Kieran Hebden, aka Four Tet, is one of
the best respected beatsmiths in music,
and is a long term member of the fantastic
Domino Records roster that also includes
Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys and Archie
Bronson Outfit. His albums are a kaleidoscope
of sounds, an organic yet electronic blend
of folk, jazz and hip hop; ‘folk music
made by machines’ according to The
Guardian. Radiohead, Aphex Twin and the
late J Dilla are amongst his many admirers,
and with such an individual and wonderfully
experimental sound, it’s no mystery
why. His latest release, a collection of
remixes on Domino, sees him remixing and
being remixed by artists such as Bloc Party,
Madvillain and Bonobo. His DJ sets are as
eclectic and interesting as his production
work would suggest; a myriad of sounds including
electro, stripped down house and techno,
broken beats, soul, hip hop and bits and
pieces from his epic collection of sampled
gems from across the music spectrum, every
one of them a lost classic. To call a Kieran
Hebden DJ set eclectic does no justice to
the sheer breadth of music taken in over
the night; an incomparable listening experience
is the only way to describe it!
Away from the Maas mayhem of the main room,
and the experimental wizardry of the lounge,
AKA will be moving to the sounds of the
finest house music from two of the UK scene’s
pioneers, Luke Solomon and Kenny Hawkes.
Luke and Kenny go way back, first hooking
up at seminal London Pirate station Girls
FM in the early nineties, before co-promoting
the legendary night Space at Bar Rumba,
spending seven years as London’s best
midweek house club. Their new project, Little
Creatures, sees them reunited and hosting
AKA for what promises to be one hell of
a night!
