There are very few DJs equipped with the skills, the endurance and the mettle to perform for eight hours straight. DJing for such a long time demands the artistry of a guitarist, the endurance of a marathon runner and the concentration of a chess master; though I don't recall ever seeing a guitarist, a runner or a chess master doing their thing for eight hours straight! So it's fair to say that Danny Howells is due a little credit for the feat he regularly undertakes in The End's main room, an extraordinary eight hour whirlwind of music and fun you'd be hard pushed to better at any other club night the world over.
Danny won't be the first to do an all night stint in The End's main room, but, as with everything he does, it'll be in his own inimitable style. One thing you could never accuse Howells of being is a bandwagon jumper; musically he sticks to his guns, never one to blindly follow the latest fad, Danny knows his music and knows how to rock a crowd. His sets draw from all facets of dance music, often starting with something a little ambient and down tempo, sliding effortlessly into a bit of deep and techy house, then perhaps a little prog, then into some techno before bringing the curtain down with some classics and maybe something a little experimental. There's music for all electronic music lovers; there's bits you know, bits you don't, things you love, things you used to love, things you'll learn to love - it's not called Dig Deeper for nothing!
While the one man party machine is working up a head of steam downstairs, AKA has something very special going on. Berlin-based Sonar Kollektiv will be flying in with an assortment of musical ambassadors ready to caress AKA's superb sound system with their trademark assortment box of deep house, broken beats, jazz-inflected downtempo and much more besides. This year they're celebrating ten years of releasing some of the finest music from the likes of Jazzanova, Ame, Henrik Schwarz, Dixon, and many more. DJing on the night will be Truby Trio's awesome Roland Appel, purveyors of 'elektro jazzy freestyle' music Slope and the excellent Warm Residents. AKA is in for a real treat.
Dig Deeper is a night that is diverse in every sense of the word, and the buzz of excitement that surrounds any Danny Howells all-nighter is tangible. With the visionary Sonar Kollektiv occupying AKA, there isn't much this night doesn't offer, apart from maybe an eight hour Jimi Hendrix solo... enjoy!
